Greystone Steak & Seafood’s 20th anniversary celebration is coming up on July 26th with complimentary tastes, $5 specialty drinks, photo ops, music, and more! In recognition of the 20 years in Gaslamp, we took a look back at the history of Greystone.
The Gaslamp Quarter building Greystone has occupied for the past twenty years was originally a two-story brick building constructed in 1874 by Ralph Granger. In 1887, two more stories were added and the Public Library moved-in, occupying the third floor.
The City of San Diego purchased the building in 1891 and the City of San Diego Government offices moved into the building. The Police Department occupied the first floor and the Council Chambers occupied the fourth floor. The first San Diego Mayor, Edwin Capp, office occupied the building as well.
In 1923, the building was rennovated into The Rivoli Theatre in 1923 and stayed a theatre through ownership changes, being renamed The Savoy Theater, The Diana, The Roxy,Bijou Theatre, Cinema XXX, and Pussycat throughout its history.
Greystone Steak & Seafood opened in 1999, and has since continued to stay true to its tradition of quality while staying current with seasonal dishes and cocktails. While steak is undoubtably the star of the show, Greystone prides itself on vegetarian and seafood options, as well as a primarily gluten free menu. The well-rounded menu does not sacrificing quality, flavor, or seasonality.
To start, don’t miss the Organic Greystone salad with locally sourced Encinitas living lettuce topped with caramelized walnuts, bosc pear, Maytag farms blue cheese, and truffle croutons, brought together in a light stone-ground lemon vinaigrette. Rich and decadent, the Short Rib Pappardelle combines tender and flavorful short rib with organic spinach and a vodka cream sauce for a lavish pasta dish. And, of course, you cannot miss the steaks. Greystone offers three varieties of Wagyu and an extensive selection of dry-aged cuts. Take in the delicate marbling while you savor the extraordinary depth of flavor.
