It’s New Vegas and Old Vegas all rolled into one. Las Vegas’ legendary Fremont Street was established in 1905 and in 1995, underwent its transformation to the present-day Fremont Street Experience, a five-block entertainment and retail district located in historic downtown Las Vegas. Old Vegas classics like the Golden Nugget Casino combine with modern day thrills like ziplining to create an off-strip Vegas experience that offers something for everyone.
Fremont Street Experience offers free live entertainment on three stages and features Viva Vision, the world’s largest single video screen–1,500 feet long, 90 feet wide and suspended 90 feet above the urban pedestrian mall. Viva Vision features nightly light and sounds shows with 12.5 million LED lights and a 550,000-watt sound system.
And then there is SlotZilla, a unique urban zipline featuring both an 850-foot Zipline (Lower Zipline) and 1,750-foot Zoomline (Upper Zipline), which launches riders from a 12-story slot-machine-themed platform to fly under the iconic Viva Vision canopy.
I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie, so did not expect the family-friendly (to ride on the lower zipline kids only need to weigh more than 50 pounds – anyone under 13 must be accompanied by an adult) urban zipline to offer much of a thrill. Even though I was only 114 feet above the ground on the Upper Zipline and securely strapped in superman-style, when the gate lowered I felt my breath catch in my throat. I picked up speed through the 1,750 feet I flew over Fremont Street Experience until I caught with a thud on the other side. For those faint of heart, they also offer the Lower Zipline, where flyers take off 77 feet above the ground harnessed in a sitting position. This flight is only 850-feet – half the length of Fremont Street Experience.
PRICE: Before 6 p.m. Lower Zipline – $20 Upper Zoomline – $40 After 6 p.m. Lower Zipline – $25 Upper Zoomline – $45
Fremont Street Experience also houses zombie-themed attraction “Fear the Walking Dead Survival,” a walk-through experience inspired by AMC’s hit tv series “Fear the Walking Dead™.
Not a thrill seeker? Fremont has more than 60 restaurants and specialty retail kiosks along with great live music, people watching, and casinos.
