Salt & Straw Opens to Enthusiasm in Little Italy

By January 25, 2018 No Comments

Salt & Straw, the iconic family-run ice cream purveyor known for its imaginative, taste-provoking ice cream creations, is now officially open in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood. Locally churned in small hand-crafted batches and conceived by Head Ice Cream Maker Tyler Malek, the creamery will be offering a monthly limited-edition five flavor lineup in addition to their classic flavors.

This month’s imaginative, taste-provoking ice cream flavor series is the limited-edition Vegan New Year menu, offered through Feb. 1. Make sure to check out Salt & Straw before then to sample our own personal favorite – Candied Mango Faux-yo.

Happy Birthday Elvis: You know January 8th is Elvis’ birthday, right? It is. So Salt & Straw made banana coconut ice cream with swirls of marionberry jam and peanut butter fudge and bits of candied coconut, to celebrate.

Chocolate Hazelnut Fudge: Salt & Straw’s been working on a hazelnut ice cream for a while, and they finally hit on the perfect combination of hazelnut milk and hazelnut butter with a little salt, sugar, and really good cocoa powder. And just so it’s as over-the-top delicious as possible, they fold in pieces of homemade gluten-free brownies. This is one ice cream so decadently delicious you won’t believe its vegan!

Mint Chip Whoopie Pie: A rich coconut ice cream with freckled chocolate and pure peppermint oil from Seely Farm is brought to another level with pieces of their homemade Whoopie Pies stirred in!

Candied Mango Faux-yo: Salt & Straw’s done it! They’ve figured out how to make frozen yogurt using coconut cream. Made with sugar, mango puree, salt, vanilla and why yes, that is a little green cardamom you may be tasting. Then more pieces of candied mango are folded in for texture and fun for a flavor that tastes like a fresh-fruit sorbet. This limited time flavor won our hearts (and stomachs).

Modern Times’ Hopped Orange Creamsicle: When Salt & Straw tasted Modern Times’ barrel-aged Thermometer Island sour saison with cara cara and blood orange, they knew they had to make it into ice cream. Made with a little blood orange juice, a dash of rosewater, a bit of extra hops and lots of their delicious beer – it’s fruity, a little bitter and very San Diego.
