Spring brings theme park food festivals – a great excuse for San Diego foodies to visit Disneyland’s Food & Wine Festival or, right in San Diego, SeaWorld’s Seven Seas Food Festival. The day doesn’t come cheap – food and drinks are their own cost in addition to theme park admission. But 2018 may be the best year to check out the Seven Seas Food Festival yet, due to a new “Daring Flavors” presentation sponsored by Coca-Cola® that features 14 dishes prepared with some of the world’s most exotic ingredients. Above, see one of the most daring dishes, the Chili Lime Chapulines Tostada – a GRASSHOPPER tostada with Avocado Spread, Queso Fresco, and Pico.
The food festival focuses on international street food items, along with craft beers and wines, and offers live musical performances as well. SeaWorld’s Executive Chef, Axel Dirolf and his team, showcases local, sustainable ingredients to create international flavors. Above, the Pretzel Mac & Cheese was made with Chorizo, Panela Cheese, and Chives.
Winner of the most interesting food experience was the Nitrogen Fromage – a futuristic version of a childhood favorite. Minus 320-Degree Cheddar Cheese Balls offers a daring way to cool down on a hot SeaWorld day!
Eat, Drink, Be SD’s food pick of the festival was the Cave-Aged Humboldt Fog Cheese. A generous serving for the quality, the decadent cheese was plated with Honey Comb, Olives, and Pretzel Sticks for an upscale food fest option.
Also highly recommended is the Black Pepper Marinated Strawberries with a touch of Lemon Lime Zest, and Mint. Breweries representing include Belching Beaver, Stone Brewing, Groundswell Brewing, 10 Barrel, Karl Strauss, Eppig Brewing, Coronado Brewing Company, New Belgium Brewing, and Ballast Point Brewing. Our pick for Best Drink at the Fest? Head to SoCal Flavors section to try the Sake served with a “Buzz Button.” The Buzz Button flower has a bright golden yellow bud and is oval to round. It has a slightly tart grass like flavor though its real appeal lies not in its taste but the electrifying sensation it produces. Eating the bud of the Buzz Button flower has a numbing and strong tingling affect on the mouth. Sound terrible? Some might think it unpleasant, but it is also fun and fascinating!
