The Bell Marker, Where Everyone Knows Your Name

Downtown’s recently opened brewpub The Bell Marker, named after the mission bell markers found along the historic El Camino Real, features on-site brewing, gourmet pub food, and the hallmark of the best neighborhood bars — great service. Regulars can expect to be remembered and greeted by name, a throwback to when restaurants and bars were focused on building community.

The brewpub’s beer program is led by San Diego native Noah Regnery, formerly of Pizza Port Brewing. Their Horton’s Hef is a standout favorite, along with their Sonoma Pride Session IPA (in addition to tasting great, 100% of the proceeds from this beer are donated to the King Ridge Foundation supporting relief from the devastating fires in Sonoma County).

Culinary Director Trevor Faris has created a “California Centric” menu with plentiful vegan options including the much-hyped, entirely plant-based Impossible Burger. Our top menu pick for vegans AND carnivores alike is the Braised Beet Salad. This delightful twist on a beet salad is hands down the best new salad in San Diego. First, the flavor. Mint, pomegranate, and sherry vinaigrette brightens the braised beets with a delicious pop of flavor that had us licking the bowl. Next, the texture. The beet puree that the salad sits on is rich and creamy, accented by dukkah and red quinoa, topped with velvety beets. Insiders tip: add additional protein, like shrimp, to make this salad a great entree option!

Attention to detail in their dishes is what will make The Bell Marker successful in San Diego. Their pizza dough, for example, is fermented for 3 days (similar to focaccia) to bring out optimal flavor. For a decadent pie, try the White Mushroom with fresh cream, roasted mushrooms, fontina, pecorino, and thyme. Their pizzas are also available vegan!

In addition to the in house brews, check out their cocktail menu. The Rainbow Room is their play for millennials, combining “Unicorn Water” and “Rainbow Oil” with Greenbar Tru Lemon Vodka, Chareau Aloe, Pomegranate, and Lime.
